What should go in an Event Subscriber Script?
The right candidates are operations where the user does not need to see the result before moving on.
Outbound API callouts. If a record save triggers a notification to an external system, the user does not need to wait for that callout to return. Moving it to an Event Subscriber Script means the callout happens on its own timeline. A slow or temporarily unavailable external endpoint no longer holds up the save.
Related record updates. Updating a set of child records after a parent record changes is a common afterSubmit pattern that can be slow at scale. If those updates do not need to be visible to the user immediately after save, they belong in an Event Subscriber Script.
Audit and logging operations. Writing to a custom log record or an external logging system after a transaction is created is pure overhead in a synchronous context. As a background task it has no user impact.
Downstream triggers. Any operation that kicks off a process in a third-party platform, such as a fulfillment system, a CRM, or a marketing platform, is a good fit. The user saved the record; the downstream process runs on its own.
What should stay in afterSubmit?
Not everything belongs in the background. Some logic has to finish before the user sees the updated record.
If the script updates custom fields or data that need to be visible in the UI immediately after the record saves, that logic should stay in afterSubmit (or move to beforeSubmit if it can run before commit). The user reloading the record a few seconds after save and seeing fields that have not yet updated is a worse experience than waiting an extra second on save.

What are Event Subscriptions?
Event Subscriptions are a separate 2026.2 feature that handles a different problem. Where an Event Subscriber Script is SuiteScript that runs background logic inside NetSuite, Event Subscriptions are a configuration-based feature with no script required. You configure which record type and event type to watch, provide an external HTTP endpoint URL, and NetSuite sends a real-time JSON payload to that endpoint when the event fires.
This is the native webhook pattern for NetSuite. Previously, sending a real-time JSON payload to an external system on a record event required either an afterSubmit script that made an HTTP callout, or a RESTlet or REST web service approach where the external system polled for changes. How to identify which afterSubmit scripts are migration candidates
Before migrating any afterSubmit logic, it is worth auditing what you have and categorizing each script's operations. Not everything is a good candidate, and some scripts will need to stay synchronous. The audit is the first step.
Start with the Script Execution Log. In NetSuite, navigate to Setup > SuiteCloud > Script Execution Logs. Filter by script type (User Event) and sort by execution time. Scripts that consistently run for more than one or two seconds on a high-volume record type are the first candidates to evaluate. Scripts that run quickly are lower priority.
For each slow script, list what the script does. Separate the operations into two categories: operations where the result needs to be visible to the user before the UI refreshes (field updates on the saved record, validation that should surface as an error), and operations where the user can move on while the work happens in the background (callouts, related record updates, logging, notifications).
