NetSuite Integration Broken After an Upgrade: What to Check

NetSuite upgrades twice a year. Most upgrades are uneventful for integrations. Some are not. When an integration that was working before an upgrade stops working after it, the failure is usually in one of a small number of places.
This guide covers how to diagnose a broken integration systematically without making changes that complicate the root cause analysis.
Check the error before touching anything
The most important step is reading the error before changing any configuration. Changing the integration's settings, re-authenticating, or redeploying a script before you know the error message often obscures what went wrong.
For SuiteScript-based integrations (Restlets, Suitelets): Navigate to Customization > Scripting > Script Deployments. Find the deployed script. Click on it and check the Execution Log tab. The log shows each execution with its result status, error message, and the full stack trace if applicable.
For SuiteTalk SOAP integrations: Check the application's integration log. The SOAP response from NetSuite contains the fault code and detail text that identifies the failure. If your application does not log SOAP responses, enable logging temporarily before the next test call.
For REST web services: The HTTP response status and body contain the error. A 401 response indicates an authentication problem. A 400 response typically indicates a malformed request, often caused by a field that was required, renamed, or removed in the current release. A 500 response indicates a server-side error in NetSuite's handling of the request.
For third-party connectors (Celigo, Boomi, MuleSoft, etc.): Check the connector platform's error log for the specific NetSuite error message. The connector's own error message often wraps the NetSuite error, and the NetSuite error is the one that identifies the root cause.
Authentication failures
The most common integration failure after a NetSuite upgrade is authentication. Oracle has been deprecating NLAuth (credential-based authentication using email and password) in favor of OAuth 2.0 and Token-Based Authentication (TBA). NLAuth has had restricted availability for new integrations for several years, and its end-of-support timeline has been communicated in NetSuite's release notes.
If the error message references invalid credentials, authentication failure, or a permissions problem that was not present before the upgrade, check whether the integration is using NLAuth. If it is, the solution is to migrate to TBA or OAuth 2.0. This requires generating integration credentials in NetSuite under Setup > Integration > Manage Integrations, creating access tokens for the relevant roles, and updating the integration to use the new authentication headers.
The migration is documented in NetSuite's SuiteCloud Developer documentation. The specific steps depend on the integration type: Restlet, SuiteTalk SOAP, or REST web services each have slightly different token header formats.
SuiteScript API changes in Restlets
If the integration calls a custom Restlet, and the Restlet uses SuiteScript APIs that were modified in the current release, the Restlet may return an error or unexpected data without the calling application receiving a clear error message.
Check the Restlet's execution log for the specific SuiteScript error. Common API-related failures after upgrades include:
Deprecated API method calls. SuiteScript 2.x has deprecated specific methods over time. If the Restlet calls a method that was removed or changed in the current release, the script will fail with a type error or a method-not-found error. The execution log shows the exact line and method.
Record type or field ID changes. If NetSuite renamed or reclassified an internal field ID in the current release, and the Restlet references that field by its internal ID, the field read or write will fail silently (returning null or not applying the value) or explicitly (throwing an error). Cross-reference the script's field references against the current release notes.
Search API changes. SuiteQL has had sort-order behavior changes in recent releases. If the Restlet uses N/search or N/query to return data and the result set order has changed, the calling application may receive data in a different order than it expects, which can cause mapping errors downstream without a visible NetSuite error.
Native record and field changes
Some releases modify native record behavior in ways that affect integrations that read from or write to standard fields.
If the integration creates or updates native records (Sales Orders, Vendors, Customers, Purchase Orders), check the release notes for the record types the integration touches. Field type changes, new mandatory fields, and changes to field validation are the most common causes of write failures.
A 400-series error with a message referencing a specific field ID, a required field that was not supplied, or an invalid value for a field type is typically a native field change. The fix is identifying the field that changed and updating the integration's mapping or payload to match the current field configuration.
SuiteQL sort-order changes
NetSuite 2026.2 introduced a change to SuiteQL that affects queries that use ORDER BY on certain indexed fields. Queries that previously returned results in a specific order without an explicit ORDER BY clause may return results in a different order in the current release.
If your integration uses SuiteQL to query data and processes the results in positional order (first row, second row, etc.), a sort-order change can cause incorrect data mapping without a visible error. The integration continues to run, but it is writing the wrong values to the wrong fields.
To check for this: compare the SuiteQL query results between your Sandbox (which has the current release) and a snapshot of what the query returned before the upgrade. If the row order is different, add an explicit ORDER BY clause to the query to lock the result order going forward.
Third-party connector issues
If the integration runs through a third-party connector platform, the connector may have its own compatibility issues with the current NetSuite release, separate from any changes to the underlying API.
Check whether the connector platform has released an update or patch for the current NetSuite release. Platforms like Celigo, Boomi, and MuleSoft publish compatibility notes for major NetSuite releases. An outdated connector version may send requests in a format that the current release no longer accepts.
For connector-specific issues, the primary diagnostic source is the connector platform's own support documentation and the integration's error log within the connector interface.
When the error is not in NetSuite
Not every integration failure after a NetSuite upgrade originates in NetSuite. If the NetSuite execution log shows no errors for the relevant time period, the failure may be in the external system:
- The external system's authentication token for NetSuite expired during the upgrade window.
- The external system's network configuration does not allow outbound connections to NetSuite's updated IP ranges.
- The external system's schema validation rejected a response from NetSuite that changed format in the current release.
If the NetSuite side shows no errors, the diagnostic focus shifts to the external system's logs.
A systematic diagnostic sequence
When an integration breaks after an upgrade and the cause is not immediately obvious:
- Read the NetSuite execution log or SOAP fault before changing anything.
- Identify whether the error is an authentication failure, an API error, a field validation error, or a missing result.
- Check the current release notes for changes affecting the record types, fields, and APIs the integration uses.
- Compare integration behavior in Sandbox (current release) against Production behavior to isolate what changed.
- Make the minimum change required to fix the identified cause and test in Sandbox before deploying to Production.
Changing multiple things simultaneously in response to an integration failure makes it harder to identify what actually fixed the problem, and increases the risk of introducing a new issue while resolving the first.
