What to Do When a NetSuite Script Breaks After an Upgrade

A release-related script failure is a SuiteScript customization that ran correctly before a NetSuite platform update but stops working or produces different output after the update, without any change made by the account administrator. These failures are distinct from bugs introduced by the developer because the script code itself has not changed.

NetSuite pushes two major releases per year and several minor updates in between. Scripts that have run without issue for years can fail silently after an update with no warning to the account administrator. This guide walks through how to diagnose a release-related script failure, identify what changed, and restore function.

How Do Release-Related Script Failures Typically Appear?

The most common symptoms:

  • A user event script stops firing on save, so records are missing expected data or automation steps are not completing
  • A scheduled script runs and exits with an error logged in the Script Execution Log with no visible impact on users
  • A Map/Reduce script starts failing on input stage and produces no output
  • A Suitelet or RESTlet returns an HTTP error or a blank page instead of the expected response
  • A workflow stops moving records through expected states because a workflow action script is failing

The failure is usually not total: other records save fine, other scripts run fine, so the problem is often invisible until someone notices missing data or a downstream process breaks.

Step 1: Check the Script Execution Log

Navigate to Customization > Scripting > Script Execution Log. Filter by the script that is suspected to be failing. Look at the log entries from the time the problem started.

The most useful columns:

  • Status: Completed, Failed, or Pending
  • Title: The name of the script and deployment
  • Date/Time: Confirms when the failures started
  • Details: The actual error message

If the log shows entries with status Failed, open the detail on a failed entry. The error message will usually tell you the exact line number and error type.

Common error types in release-related failures:

UNEXPECTED_ERROR at a specific line typically means an API behavior changed or a field reference is no longer valid.

SSS_USAGE_LIMIT_EXCEEDED means the script hit a governance limit. NetSuite adjusts governance limits between releases, and a script that was close to a limit may push over it after the release changes the cost of an API call.

TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined means the script is attempting to access a property or field that no longer returns data the way it did before. Field IDs sometimes change between releases on certain record types.

Step 2: Identify when the failure started

Look at the Script Execution Log and identify the first failed entry. Compare that timestamp to the NetSuite release schedule. NetSuite releases updates during a maintenance window, typically on weekends. If the first failure aligns with a maintenance window, the cause is almost certainly the release.

To confirm the timing, go to Setup > Company > Release Notes in your account. This shows which release version is currently running in your Production account and when it was applied.

Step 3: Check the NetSuite release notes

This is the fastest path to identifying the root cause. NetSuite publishes detailed release notes for every update that list changed APIs, deprecated features, modified field behavior, and governance limit adjustments.

The release notes are available in the NetSuite Help Center under Release Notes for the current version. The most relevant sections for script failures:

  • SuiteScript section: lists API changes, deprecated methods, and behavior changes
  • Record changes: if the record type your script uses is listed here, check whether any field IDs or behavior changed
  • Governance: check whether limits for the script type were adjusted

Search the release notes for the API call or field ID your script uses. If you find it in the notes, that is the cause.

Step 4: Reproduce the failure in Sandbox

Before fixing anything in Production, replicate the failure in Sandbox. If your Sandbox has not refreshed to the same release version as Production, check Setup > Company > Release Notes in the Sandbox account to confirm the version.

If Sandbox is on the same release version:

  1. Test the same action that triggers the failure (saving the same record type, running the same scheduled script)
  2. Confirm the same error appears in the Sandbox Script Execution Log
  3. Make the fix in Sandbox first

If Sandbox is not yet on the same release version, you will need to work in Production directly, which is riskier. In that case, test the fix logic in a developer account or a test environment that is on the same version.

Step 5: Fix the script

The fix depends on what the release changed.

If an API method was deprecated: Replace the deprecated call with the recommended alternative documented in the release notes. NetSuite typically provides migration guidance when deprecating APIs.

If field behavior changed: Update the field access pattern in the script. For example, if a sublist field is now accessed differently or returns a different data type, update the code to match the new behavior.

If the script is hitting governance limits: Review the script for places where API calls can be batched or where unnecessary API calls can be removed. Map/Reduce scripts handle large datasets better than Scheduled scripts for bulk record processing. If the limit was specifically adjusted in the release, check whether the script can be refactored to stay within the new limits.

If the issue is in a workflow action script: Workflow action scripts have specific governor limit constraints that differ from other script types. Check whether the release notes include any changes to workflow action script governance.

Step 6: Test the fix and deploy

After fixing the script in Sandbox:

  1. Run the same scenario that caused the failure
  2. Confirm the script completes with status Completed in the Script Execution Log
  3. Confirm the expected data changes or automations occurred
  4. Check whether the fix introduces any side effects on related records

When the fix is confirmed in Sandbox, deploy to Production. The deployment process is identical: update the script file, redeploy the script record, and run the same test scenario in Production to confirm resolution.

What Should You Check After Fixing a Broken Script?

After restoring the script, assess whether any data was affected during the failure window. Depending on the script type:

  • User event scripts: Records saved during the failure window may be missing data that the script was responsible for populating. A one-time cleanup script can backfill affected records.
  • Scheduled scripts: Jobs that ran and failed during the failure window may need to be re-run once the script is fixed.
  • Integration scripts (RESTlets): Identify whether any external systems that call the RESTlet encountered errors during the failure window and whether any data needs to be re-synced.

How Do You Prevent Scripts From Breaking After Future Upgrades?

A release-related script failure often signals that the script was not tested against the new release before it went live. The standard prevention is:

  • Maintain a Sandbox account that is refreshed before each major release
  • Run a set of test scenarios against affected scripts in Sandbox before each Production release update
  • Monitor the Script Execution Log regularly so failures surface quickly rather than being discovered when a process breaks

For accounts with many custom scripts, a systematic pre-release test pass is worth the time investment. A broken script discovered the day after a release is recoverable; one discovered two weeks later after silent failures have accumulated data issues is significantly more expensive to remediate.
