NetSuite Health Check vs. Account Optimization: What's the Difference?
Need help with this in your NetSuite account?
Quick answer
A NetSuite health check is a diagnostic engagement: it reviews the account, identifies what is wrong, classifies findings by severity, and delivers a written report. Nothing in the account changes. A NetSuite account optimization is a remediation engagement: it takes a prioritized list of findings and addresses them. The health check comes first; the optimization follows. You cannot have a well-scoped optimization without the findings from an assessment, and an assessment is not useful unless someone acts on what it finds. A health check typically takes five to seven business days. The review covers scripts, workflows, saved searches, custom fields, roles and permissions, and integrations, with each finding classified by severity. The optimization that follows is scoped directly from those findings: an account with two critical findings requires a different remediation effort than one with twelve. Making changes without a prior assessment risks addressing visible symptoms while missing the root causes generating them.
The distinction is diagnosis versus treatment. A health check tells you what is wrong. An account optimization fixes it.
What a health check does
A NetSuite health check is a fixed-scope assessment of a live account by an independent reviewer. The reviewer examines the account across six areas: script deployments, workflow configurations, saved searches, custom fields and forms, roles and permissions, and integration health. Each finding is classified by severity. The deliverable is a written report.
During the health check, nothing in the account changes. The reviewer reads; they do not write. The only outcome of a health check is knowledge: a documented, classified list of what the account contains, what is working correctly, and what needs attention.
The health check is useful regardless of what happens next. The report can be used to scope a remediation engagement with the same provider. It can be handed to a different developer. It can be used to build a business case for budget. It can simply sit on a shelf until the team is ready to act on it.
A health check takes five to seven business days from access to report delivery. The scope is fixed: six areas, written report, severity classification. There is no variable scope and no ambiguity about what the deliverable is.
What account optimization does
A NetSuite account optimization is a remediation engagement: it addresses specific findings in the account. Scripts are deactivated or corrected. Workflow entry conditions are tightened. Saved searches are restructured with indexed first criteria. Unused custom fields are removed from forms. Integration errors are diagnosed and fixed.
Account optimization work is scoped from findings. It requires knowing what to fix before work begins. An optimization engagement that starts without a prior assessment is working blind: it may address some problems and miss others, and it cannot be confident that it has addressed the most important problems first.
The scope of an account optimization is variable; it depends on what the assessment found. An account with two Critical findings and fifteen Advisory findings requires a different optimization than one with twelve Critical findings and two Advisory ones. The effort is proportional to what was found.
Which comes first
Always the health check.
The only exception is when the findings are already known: a previous assessment has been completed, the findings are current, and the team knows exactly what needs to be addressed. In that case, the optimization can begin from the existing findings without a new assessment.
In every other case, the health check comes first. The reason is straightforward: optimization work without a complete assessment picture risks prioritizing the wrong things. A developer who is brought in to fix a performance problem may fix it and miss the Critical data integrity issue that was not visible from the performance symptom alone. The assessment prevents this by mapping the full scope before any changes are made.
Can they be done together?
Some providers bundle assessment and remediation into a single engagement. This is not the same as doing them simultaneously: the assessment still happens first, the findings are reviewed with the client, and then remediation begins from the findings. The bundle combines them contractually but preserves the sequence.
Whether to bundle depends on the situation. If you already know you want both the assessment and the remediation, a bundled engagement can be more efficient. If you want the assessment first and need to decide whether to proceed with remediation based on what it finds, separate engagements give you that decision point.
SuitePacific keeps them separate by default. The health check is a fixed-scope, fixed-cost engagement that delivers a report. The account optimization is scoped from what the report finds. The client always has the option to take the report elsewhere.
A practical example
An operations team notices that their Sales Order saves have slowed down over the past few months. They bring in a developer to fix the performance problem.
Without a prior health check: The developer investigates the most obvious cause, finds a saved search in a dashboard portlet with no indexed first criterion, fixes that, and the dashboard loads faster. The Sales Order save time is unchanged, because the root cause was an undiscovered script consuming 4,200 governance units per save. That script is not found because the developer did not have visibility into the full script deployment list.
With a prior health check: The health check surfaces both the dashboard saved search and the script governance problem in the same findings report. Both are classified correctly (the script as High-priority, the saved search as High). The optimization addresses both in sequence. The dashboard loads faster and the Sales Order saves return to normal.
The value of the health check is not in the findings it produces for the obvious problem; it is in the findings it produces for the non-obvious problems that share the same root cause.
